PLEASE EXPLAIN REVELATION 20: 11-15. IS THIS LITERAL OR FUGURATIVE?

This is a literal description of the unbeliever’s judgment.

This passage of Scripture reads: “Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire”.

This is the final judgment of the unsaved dead. It is the most terrifying scene imaginable. It is the place where all those who have rejected the Lord Jesus Christ, will stand, covered with their sins, before a holy God!

Verse 11. It is called the “great WHITE throne, because it represents the absolute holiness of God. Heaven and earth must flee away at His presence. And all the unsaved will stand in open space before the God of the universe.

In verse 12 the “BOOKS” (plural) are opened. These contain the records of each person’s life. There will be the book of THOUGHTS, the book of WORDS, the book of DEEDS, the book of MOTIVES, And the book of INFLUENCE UPON OTHERS, etc.

The “BOOK (singular) of life” will be opened to show that their names are not there, because they have never received Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. This is the Book that determines their eternal destiny (verse 15). Then, these other books, will determine the DEGREE of punishment.

In verse 13, “death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them. “Death” refers to the grave, the place of their bodies; And Hades, refers to the place of lost souls. Their bodies and souls will be reunited.

In verse 14, Then the whole person, body and soul, will be cast into the lake of fire. And this will be the eternal destiny of all those who reject Jesus Christ.
